ChatGPT and Gemini Passport Photo Prompts — and Whether Official Documents Accept the Result

A good passport photo prompt asks the AI to keep your face unchanged: “Don’t change my face, features or hair; plain white background, 5:6 portrait crop, shoulders visible, no filters or retouching.” Ready-made prompts for ChatGPT and Gemini are below, but generative AI can redraw a face, so for an ID, passport or visa, check the result.

Key takeaways

  • Chat-based AI tools regenerate the whole image when they edit a photo; details such as eye shape, nose, moles and hairline can change.
  • A good passport photo prompt explicitly asks to keep the face, for a plain white background, a 5:6 portrait ratio (Turkish 50×60 mm) and no filters or retouching.
  • Some authorities, such as the UK and Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defence, explicitly refuse photos altered by software; the issuing authority’s own rule always decides.
  • For an official document, check the output against the size (Turkish ID and passport 50×60 mm, head 32–36 mm) and the background, light and expression rules; sizes differ by country.

Where is it used?

For anyone who wants to make a passport or ID photo with ChatGPT, Gemini (Nano Banana), Grok or Copilot and wonders whether the result will pass for an ID card, passport, driving licence or visa application.

How it works

ChatGPT and Gemini Passport Photo Prompts — and Whether Official Documents Accept the Result — get it right in 4 steps.

  1. Take the source photo properly

Shoot in front of a plain, well-lit wall, with no shadows on your face, looking straight at the camera. AI cannot fully fix the light or the angle; a good source photo means a good result.

  2. Paste the prompt and state the ratio

After uploading the photo, use a prompt that explicitly asks to keep the face, for a plain white background and a 5:6 portrait ratio; write that no filters, retouching or smile should be added.

  3. Compare the output with the original

Are the eye shape, eyebrows, nose, moles and scars, ears, hairline and glasses frame the same? If even one detail has changed, the photo no longer shows you exactly.

  4. Check it against the size and the rules

Crop to the document size and check head height, background, light and expression. On vesikalik.com.tr the analysis is free and reports every rule one by one.

Passport Photo Prompt for ChatGPT, Gemini and Nano Banana (2026)

Ready-made passport photo prompts by goal — paste them after uploading your photo
GoalPromptNote
Closest to a document photo (keep the face)Do not change the face, facial features, skin tone, hair or glasses of the person in this photo in any way. Only make the background plain white; the person should face the camera straight on, with shoulders visible and the head centred; frame it in a 5:6 portrait ratio. Do not add filters, retouching, beautifying, make-up, a smile or new clothes; even out the light on the face so that no shadows remain.Always compare the result with the original.
Short version for Gemini / Nano BananaTurn this photo into a passport photo: keep the face exactly as it is, no retouching, plain white background, head and shoulders, looking straight at the camera, neutral expression, 5:6 portrait ratio. With a short prompt the risk of the face changing is higher.
Longest, most explicit version (works in any tool)Edit this photo into a biometric passport photo. Identity: keep the face exactly the same — do not change eye shape, eyebrows, nose, lips, jawline, ears, moles, scars, skin texture, hairline, hair or glasses. No retouching, smoothing, beautifying or make-up. Background: plain, even white, no texture or shadows. Framing: head and top of shoulders, head centred and upright, facing the camera, eyes open, neutral expression, mouth closed. Light: even on both sides of the face, no shadows or glare. Output: 5:6 portrait ratio, highest available resolution, no text or watermark.Naming each feature leaves the model less to “fix”; still compare.
CV / LinkedIn headshot (not official)Without changing the face of the person in this photo, create a professional head-and-shoulders portrait in front of a plain light-grey studio background, wearing a simple dark jacket, with a natural, slight smile. Not for official documents; the smile and the generated background do not fit a document frame.

These prompts work the same way in ChatGPT’s image editing, Gemini (Nano Banana), Grok and Copilot: upload your own photo first, then paste the prompt. The sentence that matters most is the one asking the model to keep your face; leave it out and the model will try to “improve” it. Stating the ratio is just as essential, because most tools return a square image by default, and when a square output is cropped to a 50×60 mm Turkish ID photo, the head ends up either too large or too small.

The prompts are in English, which some tools follow more consistently than other languages. A passport photo prompt for women or men is the same prompt: document rules do not change, so simply name what must stay as it is, such as long hair, a headscarf, a beard or glasses. If you don’t like the result, improving the source photo helps more than lengthening the prompt: flat light, no shadow on the face and a straight look at the camera. AI cannot fully correct the direction of the light or the angle of your head; how to get both right is in our guide to taking a passport photo with your phone.

Prompts don’t know millimetres: typing “50×60 mm” does not turn the output into millimetres, it only affects the aspect ratio. Millimetres, DPI and pixel dimensions are fixed at print or upload time. Sizes also differ by country — the US uses 2×2 in (51×51 mm, a square), the UK and Schengen countries 35×45 mm — so change the ratio in the prompt to match your document. A Turkish ID card, passport or driving licence photo is 50×60 mm (5×6 cm), which is 591×709 pixels at 300 DPI.

Will an AI Passport Photo Be Accepted for an ID, Passport or Visa?

Short answer: it depends on the authority, and the risk lies in your face being changed. Some authorities say so explicitly. The UK requires passport photos to be “unaltered by computer software” (GOV.UK passport photo rules), and for visa applications it states that the photo “must not be altered by computer software or through other means (for example, by adding a filter)” (GOV.UK visa photo guidance). In Türkiye, the Ministry of National Defence (MSB) says in its smart-card photo specification that the photo must not have been changed in any way with photo-editing software (MSB smart-card photo specification, in Turkish).

The biometric photo rules published by Türkiye’s civil registry (NVİ) contain no separate clause on AI; they ask for the size, a white background, head height and a neutral expression (NVİ biometric photo rules, in Turkish). But the whole point of a biometric document is recognising your face: the photo on an ID card and in a passport chip is compared with your live face by face-recognition systems. A photo in which the spacing of the eyes, the nose or the jawline has been redrawn no longer shows you exactly and can cause a matching problem, whichever country issues the document.

This risk is not theoretical. In a measurement on our own production pipeline, a wrong text prompt dropped face similarity (ArcFace) from the 0.92–0.98 band to 0.72–0.81 — in a generation that had only been asked to change the clothing. Chat-based tools don’t measure this similarity; if you don’t notice the change, nobody warns you. That is why the safe route for an official document is a method that either does not redraw the face at all, or measures the face it draws and discards anything below a threshold. For how the two standards differ, see biometric photo vs standard ID photo.

Check Your AI Passport Photo: The 6 Most Common Mistakes

Common mistakes in passport and ID photos made with AI
MistakeWhy it happensHow to spot it
Face changedThe model regenerates the imageEye shape, moles, ears or hairline differ from the original
Wrong ratioThe tool returns a square by defaultOnce cropped, the head is either too large or too small
Low resolutionOutput size is limitedDetails look blurry in print or when zoomed in
Head size offThe model doesn’t know millimetresIn a 50×60 frame the head falls outside the 32–36 mm band
Background and shadowThe light source stays in the photoBackground grey or patchy; shadow on the face or behind it
BeautifyingThe model “fixes” skin and faceSkin texture erased; face looks smooth and artificial

The first mistake is the sneakiest, because it is hard to notice: the output looks like you, but it isn’t you. Open the original photo and the output side by side and go through the details one at a time. Square ratio and head size, on the other hand, stay invisible until you measure them; an ID photo cropped slightly too large or too small looks normal to the eye but does not meet the authority’s size.

vesikalik.com.tr’s free analysis checks the measurable part of these six points: framing and head ratio, background tone, shadows on the face, lighting balance, expression and sharpness are each reported separately as “pass”, “warning” or “fail”. For a more accurate result, upload your own original photo rather than the AI output; if something fails, the photo rejection reasons guide explains which rule failed and why.

Headshot Prompt for ChatGPT: When Is It Enough for CV, LinkedIn and Social Media?

If no authority can reject the photo, there are no rules either: for a CV, a LinkedIn profile, a company directory or social media, a headshot made with a prompt is often good enough. The size is up to you, and a light-grey or coloured background, a natural smile and a jacket are all fine. The one thing to watch is, again, that the face still looks like you; a profile photo introduces you too.

If you want to add a jacket or a suit, the detailed guide is on our AI corporate headshot page: how face-preserving generation works, how the clothing is chosen, and which flaws it fixes and which it does not are all explained there with measurements. For the right dimensions of a LinkedIn picture, see LinkedIn profile photo size.

If you are thinking of using the same photo on your CV and in an official application, prepare two separate frames. The smile and a coloured or textured background in the CV frame are reasons for rejection in an ID or passport application; the document frame needs a plain white, shadow-free background and a neutral expression with the mouth closed. A jacket or shirt is not a problem on its own, as long as the collar and shoulder line do not blend into the background.

Prompt vs a Face-Preserving Tool: What Is the Difference?

Instead of writing a prompt, you can upload your photo directly: the system first analyses it against the rules, then prepares the classic ID photo. In the classic output your face stays exactly as it is; the background is cleaned, the frame is cropped to the document’s size and the lighting is balanced. Next to it, an AI version is generated as a second option: the clothing and background are renewed with AI, your face is preserved and similarity is measured; an output below the threshold is never shown to you, and one that breaks a rule is not delivered. You decide which one to take.

If the authority explicitly asks for a photo not altered by software (as UK visas and passports do), follow the authority’s own instructions instead of using generative AI output. The sizes and rules for Turkish documents, one by one, are on the biometric photo sizes page, and the current price of the digital file and prints is on biometric photo prices.

Do's and Don'ts

Do

5
  • State in the prompt that your face and facial features must not be changed
  • Ask for a plain white background, a 5:6 portrait ratio, visible shoulders and a straight look at the camera
  • Put the output next to the original photo and compare the details
  • Follow the issuing authority’s own photo rules for any official application
  • Download at the highest resolution and crop to the document size afterwards

Don't

5
  • Don’t ask for beautifying, make-up, skin smoothing or filters
  • Don’t let the AI generate a new face or someone else’s face
  • Don’t upload a square (1:1) output to a portal that wants a portrait size without cropping it
  • Don’t submit generative output to an authority that requires photos unaltered by software
  • Don’t use a smiling, shadowed or grey-background output for a biometric document

FAQ

Where does the AI run?
All face analysis, background removal and ID-photo generation run on our own local AI server; your photo is never sent to a third-party cloud. MediaPipe face landmarks, the BiRefNet background model and optional super-resolution enhancement all run in the same secure environment.
Is retouching or Photoshop allowed on a biometric photo?
For a biometric ID photo only technical improvements are applied: background cleanup, cropping, light and shadow balancing and, when needed, super-resolution or rotation. Retouches that change facial features (slimming the nose, shortening the chin, removing natural moles or scars, skin filters) are never applied — they can get the photo rejected. Our pipeline is designed for biometric compliance, not beautification.
Is an AI-generated profile photo acceptable for a professional profile?
The test is not the name of the technique but whether the photo shows you. A face invented from nothing is of course unacceptable — it gets noticed at the first face-to-face meeting and destroys trust. That is not what we do: the source is your real photograph, the model rebuilds the clothing and the studio background, and the face is preserved from the source. The generated frame is measured for facial similarity against the source, and a result below the threshold is never shown to you. So what comes out is not "someone like you" but you, with the background and the outfit changed.
Does AI change my facial features in a corporate portrait?
No — and that is not a promise but a measured gate. After generation, the facial similarity between the source photo and the produced frame is computed; if the result falls below the threshold, the frame is marked rejected and never shown to you. The gate exists for a practical reason: when the model misreads the outfit or the age, similarity drops visibly, and when it reads them correctly it stays high. In other words the system itself discards a face-altering output before it can be sold. If you dislike the outfit you can change it from the result screen; the face stays the same on every attempt.
Can an AI corporate portrait be used for an official document?
No, do not. A corporate portrait steps outside document requirements at three points: the background is light grey rather than white, the framing is more generous than documents allow, and the clothing is rebuilt during generation. None of that matters on a professional profile, but every one of them is a rejection reason for ID card, passport, driving licence and visa applications. For an official document, pick that document in the wizard: a compliant frame is produced from the same source photo and the free analysis checks each criterion. Which size applies to which document is in the biometric photo guide.
