What Is a Biometric Photo?

A biometric photo is an official photograph bound to measurable rules so that face recognition systems can verify a person automatically: eye distance, chin-to-forehead ratio, head height and gaze direction are defined as numeric bands in the ICAO portrait quality technical report. In Turkey, the civil registry (NVI) applies these criteria locally as the 50×60 mm format for ID cards, passports and driving licences.

What separates it from an ordinary ID photo is verifiability: a frame that looks "nice" in a studio still gets rejected by the agency system if the head ratio is out of band or the background is shadowed. What Is the Difference Between a Biometric Photo and a Standard ID Photo?

The difference is measurability. "Vesikalık" is the everyday umbrella term, and the old-style ID photo was lenient: a slight smile, coloured backgrounds and free framing were tolerated. In a biometric photo the head-height-to-frame ratio, the eye line, the expression and the background colour are defined as numeric bands, and a face recognition system verifies those values by machine. Since every official application — ID card, passport, driving licence — now requires the biometric measurements, in practice the word "vesikalık" refers to this standard too.

Biometric Photo Rules: What Is Checked?

The checks run on four axes. Geometry: head height at 70-80% of the frame, eye line within the defined band, head upright. Expression: mouth closed, eyes open, no smiling. Image quality: sharp focus, natural colour, shadow-free lighting, at least 300 DPI. Accessories: glare and tinted lenses on glasses are forbidden; religious head covering is allowed, but the full facial oval — eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, chin — must remain visible.

On retouching the line is clear: technical corrections such as background cleanup, cropping and light balancing are fine; interventions that change facial features — slimming the nose, removing moles, skin filters — are grounds for rejection. How to Take a Biometric Photo at Home

No studio needed. In a daylight-lit room, in front of a plain and preferably light wall, hold the phone at eye level and take a single frontal shot. Don't stand close to the wall — it casts a shoulder shadow; position yourself at a right angle to the window so half the face doesn't go dark.
