How Many Pixels Is 25×32 mm? The Smallest Size in the Catalogue (2026)

A 25×32 mm photo is a portrait-orientation ID photo of 2.5×3.2 centimetres and the smallest size in our catalogue. At 300 DPI it equals 295×378 pixels and at 600 DPI 591×756 pixels. The same formula produces every size: 25 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 295.28 → 295 and 32 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 377.95 → 378.

Its aspect ratio is 78%, the same as 35×45 mm — a scaled-down rectangle. The framing logic is therefore familiar; only the scale changes. Placing crown-to-chin inside the 70-80% band gives 22.4-25.6 mm in a 32 mm frame, so the head occupies about half the space it would in an ID card photo.

The answer is "enough, but right at the limit". ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 describes paper photo quality as "resolution comparable to 6 - 8 line pairs per millimetre". A 300 DPI print produces 11.8 dots per millimetre; since two dots make one line pair, that is roughly 5.9 line pairs — the very bottom of the band. By the same arithmetic 600 DPI reaches 11.8 line pairs and sits above it.

The place where this difference becomes visible is not large prints but small ones. Softness the eye cannot detect in a 50×60 mm photo shows up in a 25 mm wide frame at fine transitions such as the pupil, the lashes and the lip line. Print the same file at two sizes and the smaller one looks softer; the cause is not the printer but the same detail being squeezed into fewer millimetres.

The practical rule is this: if the print is handed over and read by eye, 300 DPI (295×378 pixels) is comfortably enough. If the photo will be scanned, photocopied or laminated onto a card, choose the 600 DPI version (591×756 pixels). The difference is small in file size and large in output safety.

How Is Facial Detail Preserved in a Small Print?

The only method that preserves detail in a small format is scaling in the right direction. Reducing a high-resolution frame to 295 pixels folds four source pixels into one while carrying sharpness and colour transitions along. The reverse does not work: enlarging a 200-pixel file to 295 pixels creates no new information, it spreads what is there. You may not see it on screen, but printed 25 mm wide the softness is immediately noticeable.

The second trap is over-sharpening. Raising contrast is tempting in a small print, but edge-sharpening filters leave thin white halos at the hairline and along spectacle frames, and those halos look large relative to the total face area in a 25 mm frame. Heavy JPEG compression should be avoided for the same reason: below 90% quality, block artefacts appear in the flat areas of the face and banding appears in the background. Why Is 25×32 mm Not a Substitute for a Passport or Visa Photo?

The reason is a measurable limit rather than a preference. ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 states that portraits submitted to be scanned should be 45×35 mm and should have a minimum width of 35 mm, and in the same place asks for an inter-eye distance of at least 10 mm. A width of 25 mm is 10 mm below that minimum, so the geometry the standard assumes does not fit inside this frame.

The digital side reaches the same conclusion. The ICAO technical report on portrait quality requires an inter-eye distance of at least 90 pixels and treats 240 pixels as best practice for new application processes. At 300 DPI the total width of this frame is 295 pixels; a 90-pixel eye distance would mean almost a third of the frame width, and natural portrait framing does not produce that proportion. Moving to 600 DPI doubles the figure, but it does not change the fact that the size fails the 35 mm minimum width.

The practical upshot is clear: this size is not used for passport, visa or ID applications. Turkey's ID card, passport and driving licence require 50×60 mm in line with the NVİ biometric photo notice, and the international travel-document standard is 35×45 mm.
